Why 90 minutes is the honest figure

The route is four wings around a courtyard, plus the Aldobrandini Hall and the room of the Primitives, walked in one direction. There is no second floor to climb to, no annexe across a garden, no queue for a timed room inside. Ninety minutes is roughly what it takes to walk that line at a normal pace with the prince’s commentary in your ears and a few genuine stops. It is also, not coincidentally, about the length of the commentary’s useful life before your attention gives out.

The gallery does not hurry you. Nobody came round the rooms I worked telling people their time was up, and this place does not cap a visit the way the Borghese caps one at two hours. If you are the kind of visitor who reads every frame, you can stay until the room stewards start moving towards the doors.

What actually changes the number

• Whether you get a commentary. With one, most people slow down. Without one, a wall of unlabelled frames tends to move you along faster than you meant to go. The supply question is on the audio guide page.
• How you treat the Velázquez. The portrait of Innocent X has a cabinet to itself, with Bernini’s marble bust of the same pope beside it. People stand there. Add ten or fifteen minutes and do not resent them.
• Whether you add the Secret Apartments. Those four rooms and the Bath of Diana are not on the standard route, are run by a separate body with its own hours, and are booked separately. Budget them on top, not inside.
• Coffee. There is a café in the palace courtyard, and using it turns 90 minutes into two hours in the pleasantest possible way.

If you only have an hour

It still works, and I would not talk you out of it. Walk the wings without stopping, give the Velázquez Cabinet the time it deserves, look up once in the Hall of Mirrors, and accept that the Memling and the Filippo Lippi in the Green Room are going to get four minutes between them. An hour here is a better hour than an hour spent queueing somewhere larger. What I would not do is arrive an hour before last entry with a rucksack and no plan — see bags and cloakroom, because the bag will be the thing that stops you, not the clock.

Building a half-day around it

Ninety minutes inside leaves you plenty. Sant’Ignazio is two minutes away and free, the Trevi Fountain is six or seven minutes on foot, and the Pantheon is about 500 metres. A morning here and a slow lunch afterwards is one of the better shapes a Rome day can take — what is nearby lays out the cluster and which parts of it are ticketed.

Reserve the half-hour, then take as long as you like
