Villa Doria Pamphili Is Not This Place

They are two different places, on opposite sides of the city. The gallery is at Via del Corso 305, in the centro storico, a few minutes from Piazza Venezia. The Villa Doria Pamphili is a public park of about 1.8 square kilometres — roughly 180 hectares — in the Monteverde quarter on the Gianicolo, just outside Porta San Pancrazio. One is four wings of paintings in a private palace. The other is the largest landscaped public park in Rome.

Why the confusion is so persistent

Because the name is genuinely the same family’s, and because travel platforms file them together. One major review platform puts reviews of the palace under the villa’s listing, which means people read about a picture gallery while looking at a page for a park and arrive at the wrong end of Rome. The park left family hands a long time ago: the City of Rome bought it between 1965 and 1971, and it has been public ever since.

A third building joins the muddle. The Palazzo Pamphilj on Piazza Navona is also a different address, and is today the Brazilian embassy. If you want the Velázquez, the three Caravaggios and the audio guide narrated by the owner, you want Via del Corso 305 and nowhere else — how to get there.

If a page mentions jogging paths, a lake or dogs, you are reading about the park. If it mentions a pope, a palace and pictures hung four rows high, you are reading about this gallery. That test has never failed me.

Both are worth your time and neither substitutes for the other. The park is enormous, free and green; the gallery is about 90 minutes of seventeenth-century painting in a house the family still lives in. Just do not plan to walk between them — what is actually near the gallery.
