Count only paintings and you get one figure; count sculpture, tapestries and the furnishings that are part of the historic arrangement and you get another. Then there is the question of what is on the public route and what is in the rooms the family lives in. The gallery does not settle it, so I print around 650 and tell you the caveat in the same breath, every time.
What the number does not convey is the density. The works hang salon-style, floor to ceiling, several rows high, in the corridors of the four wings, grouped for symmetry rather than by school or date, exactly as a manuscript of 1767 in the family archive describes. Six hundred and fifty pictures in a purpose-built museum would fill a large building; here they fill four corridors and the walls go up a long way. Why it looks like that.
Do not try to see all of it. The gallery’s own suggested visit is about 90 minutes, which is roughly four seconds a work if you were being systematic. Pick five things, look at them properly, and let the rest be wallpaper made by geniuses.
